Kolla, G., et al. 2026. Reduced risk of overdose among clients of a safer opioid supply program in Southwestern Ontario: A pre-post observational cohort study. IJDP.

A study of a safer opioid supply (SOS) program in Kitchener-Waterloo found large reductions in non-fatal overdose in the six months after enrollment. Among 100 participants who completed follow-up, overdose prevalence dropped from 60% at program entry to 15% at six months, with overdose rates falling from 48.5 to 3.3 per 100 person-months. After accounting for factors such as homelessness, hospitalization, daily fentanyl use, and incarceration, participants had 83% lower odds of experiencing a non-fatal overdose. These findings suggest safer supply programs can substantially reduce overdose risk among people at highest risk in the current toxic drug supply.
